Disney Club (2 to 3 years) |
|
The Disney Club, a large attractive activity area with cosy corner and soft play, offers a more structured curriculum. Here, our children are introduced to experiences that help encourage concentration, sharing and working together skills with lots of group play, singing, story telling and art and craftwork all promoted through fun and games. This is where the educational element of nursery life begins to kick in at its simplest level. Colours corners, interest tables and environmental displays are designed and maintained by children, parents and staff.

At this stage of nursery life, group and personal developmental programmes are implemented into the everyday curriculum, whereby activities and experiences are designed and executed in light of the children's own specific developmental needs. As such, every child is monitored and assessed in view of their abilities and needs, aspirations and requirements, likes and dislikes. The idea of good citizenship is introduced; the children develop self confidence, respect for themselves and others. We incorporate arts and crafts, cookery, books and story telling. The education side is developed by introducing the concept of numbers, word structure, shapes, feelings and so on. and by the time this stage is completed the children will be well rounded individuals with marked personalities and a valued contribution to make.
With a dedicated, long serving staff team, play is used to achieve and learn at every available opportunity. As the ante pre-school element becomes more defined in this year, nursery takes on a whole new dimension for staff and parents, whilst the children are none the wiser, continuing to spend their days finding fun and laughter, games and excitement. Staff work to ensure that each child is making progress towards the important transition of going to school. This last stage of nursery is extremely productive and rewarding for all involved, none more so than the children themselves. The nursery use S.U.L.P, a programme that promotes good social skills and citizenship.

Pre-School (3 to 5 years) |
|
Located within the same building, nursery children attend pre- school classes on a daily basis, where they receive structured activities and more focused assistance, get homework and holidays just like their older brothers and sisters at school. Our programme is based on the Scottish Office Pre-School Curriculum Framework which covers five distinct areas: Communication & language; Physical development and movement; Expressive and aesthetic development; Emotional, personal and social development Knowledge and understanding of the world. These elements are intertwined into everyday experiences whereby the children are always learning through play. Staff monitor and assess progress regularly with a view to keeping up to date with every child's needs', developmentally, emotionally and physically. This also serves as a transition tool for communicating with teachers when the child is ready to go to school. The children enjoy junior maths, simple geography, colours, shapes and sizes, basic science models as well as different projects eg. French, German, music and movement, multiculture, world peoples and festivities to mention a few. The children help design and partake in the annual Christmas Show and there is a graduation ceremony at the end of each year to mark the departure of those who are going to school the following August. One of our goals is to prepare the children for their first day at primary school and to make the transition as smoothly as possible. This is done with continual interaction between staff, parents and children. Every Child is entitled to pre-school education from the school term following his or her third birthday with the cost being met by the local authority.

There are numerous activities and experiences on offer to the children as soon as they enter the nursery. Their options are endless as to what and who to play with, when and where they wish to go next and whether they want assistance from adults, friends or whether they would rather play alone. With so many cosy spaces to be found in the nursery environment, coupled with large open areas for group play, the children really do have the best of all worlds. The majority of toys and resources are available at child height, though some more structured games are kept out of reach as they require adult participation on request. Art and craft materials, home corner and role play equipment, water and sand play, musical instruments and dressing up are all source of interest that are utilised on the main floor most days. Our technological generation do not miss out an dare encouraged on a daily basis to participate in simple IT skills. Many of these activities take the form of educational games and resources desinged specifically for nurseries, but children also enjoy printing and typing, producing videos and music and generally finding their feet on the various computers dotted about the rooms. Computers and accessorries are maintained by an external agent, whilst all staff are regularly trained in such areas. This helps the children get the full use of such items and enhances the sense of fun and evolution of the alternative environment we all encountre in our everyday lives now. Throughout the year we have different themed activities eg. the four seasons, places to go, people who help us, festivals and so on. This helps children a greater understanding of the world about them and broadens their horizons. We celebrate Easter, Halloween and Christmas with special parties. The timetable for each age group is flexible and is changed regulary. Parents are encouraged to become involved with their children's activities, and are often invited to speak with staff, join in with activities and generally make their opinions and requirements known to us. We spend as much time as possible in our garden bringing the curriculum outdoors, supporting children as they find new interests in growth and change in their world. This is always a popular place in the nursery and despite the occasional Scottish shower, much of our time is spent exploring and investigating. There are many, many ohter activites the children get up to every day... ew have only mentioned a few here. Please ask us for more details on this aspect of our service and we will be happy to provide you with further insight.

We are always open to new ideas and positively encourage parental involvement; we have "Parent's Evenings/ Afternoons" to meet and discuss in full, how your child is progressing in all aspects of nursery life. We also have occasional parents evenings so that parents can get together with us in a social setting. Parents with special skills are invited to share their relevant skills and knowledge with us and others and this has led to a number of interesting and stimulating "workshops". If you require to view our policies, please ask a member of our managment team at your visit.
Our objective is to fill the day with fun and interest for the children so that they see coming to Nursery as a great adventure and at the same time we prepare them gently for school and adult life. |
